President Trump tapped former Bush administration official Noel J. Francisco Tuesday to serve as solicitor general, the government’s top lawyer in cases before the Supreme Court.
Mr. Francisco, 47, has been serving as acting solicitor general since Jan. 23. He replaced Obama Solicitor General Donald B. Verrilli, Jr.
The nominee served as associate counsel to President George W. Bush, and as a deputy assistant attorney general in the Bush Justice Department.
Prior to joining the Trump administration, Mr. Francisco was a top lawyer in the Washington, D.C., law firm Jones Day. While at that firm, he appeared several times before the Supreme Court, in cases involving the Religious Freedom Restoration Act and a successful challenge to then-President Barack Obama’s recess appointments to the National Labor Relations Board.
