Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer said Monday that he’s still willing to work with President Trump, but that it has to be in an area where there can be some bipartisanship.

“We are not going to oppose things because the name Trump is on it,” Mr. Schumer said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

“I’m always willing to talk to him, but it’s got to be something where he actually listens and moves in a direction,” the New York Democrat said.

“What about trade? This was an area where my views were closer to Donald Trump’s than George Bush’s or Barack Obama’s,” Mr. Schumer said.

And although Mr. Trump has said China’s help in containing North Korea is more important than calling them out as a currency manipulator, Mr. Schumer said he’s skeptical of their help.

“I think China just does what it wants,” Mr. Schumer said, explaining that China is a continual conversation between him and the president. Mr. Schumer said the two spoke about the issue as recently as Thursday.

“We’ve always had a relationship, I hope, where we can talk to each other,” said Mr. Schumer, but he did add, “He’s mainly interested in talking about what he wants to talk about.”
