HONOLULU (AP) - A union representing 13,500 Hawaii teachers announced it has reached a tentative agreement with the state on a four-year contract that will raise salaries for teachers.

KHON-TV reports (https://bit.ly/2oBQGCH) the Saturday announcement comes after nine months of negotiations between the state and the Hawaii State Teachers Association. The current public teachers’ contract will expire June 30.

Under the tentative agreement, teachers will see a salary increase of 13.6 percent over the next four years.

Union President Corey Rosenlee says the agreement is the best deal the union could negotiate considering the state’s current fiscal situation.

The tentative contract now heads to union members for a vote on Thursday.

A simple majority of teachers who cast a ballot is needed to ratify the agreement, which would take effect July 1.
