LOS ANGELES (AP) - It’s the end of the line for Harriet, the LA Metro’s tunnel boring machine.
The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority held a ceremony to retire the behemoth Friday at the site of the Crenshaw/LAX Transit Project.
Harriet completed the second of twin tunnels under Crenshaw Boulevard for the region’s latest light rail line on April 6.
The 950-ton, 400-foot-long boring machine was named in honor of Harriet Tubman, the pre-Civil War abolitionist who helped slaves escape from the South through a network known as the Underground Railroad.
The name was suggested by a student during a contest run by Metro.
The new $2 billion light rail line is expected to open in fall 2019.
