Rep. Elijah Cummings said Friday that Democrats need to have “a big tent” concept when it comes to rebuilding the party, something he hopes former President Barack Obama will help accomplish.

The Democratic Party needs to get back to supporting candidates who may be pro-life or pro-gun rights but in line with the party on other issues, Mr. Cummings said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

“Many of us don’t have a clue what’s going on in each other’s districts,” said Mr. Cummings, Maryland Democrat. “I want to win in the end, so I want to pull as many people under the tent as we can.”

Mr. Cummings said the party needs to start in local races like city councils and state legislatures, where he hopes Mr. Obama will be “very active.”

The congressman also named Sen. Tim Kaine as a future leader of the party, as well as Reps. Rep. Adam Schiff and Barbara Lee.
