ELKO, Nev. (AP) - Barrick Gold Corp. says it will spend $400,000 over the next three years in a partnership with Cisco Systems Inc. and Great Basin College in Elko to provide job skills and training for workers in the digital age.
The technology program will include both online and instructor-led courses ranging from social networking to cybersecurity.
Barrick USA President Michael Brown says the mining company will cover tuition for Barrick employees, spouses and children, as well as area veterans and members of the Western Shoshone tribe. The investment also includes hardware, software, instructor training and pay.
The initial courses offered through the college’s continuing education program are non-credit. But in September, the school plans to begin offering classes for up to four credits, which can lead to industry-recognized certification.
