Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel said Wednesday that she’d like to see President Trump get more involved in the special election races, even as some say he might be a liability.
“The president is the best messenger to turn out our vote,” Ms. McDaniel said on Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom.” “We want the president involved in every one of these special elections.”
Ms. McDaniel said Democratic candidate Jon Ossoff’s near-victory Tuesday in Georgia’s special election for the vacant seat in the 6th Congressional District was not a cause for concern for Republicans.
“Special elections in and of themselves are different and unique,” Ms. McDaniel said, pointing out that Democrats failed to get Mr. Ossoff the 50 percent needed to win the seat outright.
“They failed. They fell short of their goal,” she said.
Ms. McDaniel expressed confidence in Republicans’ ability to win the seat in June and to have a strong performance in 2018, as long as they keep their promises.
“We have to fulfill the campaign promises we made. We have to focus on health care, repealing and replacing Obamacare and tax reform,” she said.
The next special election race is in May in Montana for the former House seat held by Department of the Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke.
