CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Police in North Carolina’s largest city say a former officer has been found dead after his family reported him missing.

A news release issued by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department on Thursday said police in the nearby town of Mooresville received a missing person call from the family of 40-year-old Michael Scott Bell. The release said Bell had last contacted his family on Wednesday and they were concerned for his safety because of recent health issues.

Officers found Bell’s body around 1 p.m. Thursday on his usual walking path. Police in Mooresville are investigating the incident, adding that initial signs indicate Bell may have died of medical causes.

Bell was hired by CMPD on Sept. 14, 2009, and served as an officer on the force until last December.
