Rep. Adam Schiff says the House investigation into the Trump campaign’s connections to Russia is going in the right direction again.
“I’m happy to report our committee is back on track. We have a new Republican lead, Mike Conaway of Texas,” Mr. Schiff said on “CBS This Morning.” “I think he’s a very serious guy. We’ve had a number of good conversations since he took the Republican reigns.”
Mr. Schiff said he felt the former Republican lead on the investigation, Devin Nunes, “cast a cloud over the committee” after going to the White House to reveal the preliminary findings of the investigation.
“We now have a fresh start. We are very much back to where we should’ve been before the whole White House thing,” Mr. Schiff said.
The main question his committee is trying to answer concerns the dossier on then-presidential candidate Donald Trump’s campaign’s relationship with Russian contacts, which the FBI reportedly used to get a warrant on former Trump campaign aide Carter Page.
“One of the things we have to investigate through our committee, were the issues and allegations made in the dossier accurate? Were some of them accurate, were none of them accurate, were all of them accurate?” Mr. Schiff said. “We have to see whether it could be substantiated.”
Mr. Schiff couldn’t say when the first public hearing would be, but said the committee is in the process of putting together the witnesses they intend to call, which he hoped would include former Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates.
The Trump administration sought to block her from testifying earlier this year on the grounds of attorney-client privilege.
