BIG STONE GAP, Va. (AP) - A grand jury has indicted a man accused in the death of his ex-wife on a capital murder charge, which means he could face the death penalty.

The Bristol Herald Courier reports (https://bit.ly/2oR4PQl ) that 46-year-old Eric Monroe Jones has been at large since 38-year-old Janina Gina Lorraine Jefferson was killed Nov. 27. He was previously sought on a first-degree murder charge, but the charge was upgraded Monday to correspond with the time Jones has been on the run.

Wise County Commonwealth Attorney Chuck Slemp has declined to say whether he’ll seek the death penalty.

Jones was charged last September with assault and battery of his ex-wife, strangulation and trespassing on the same day their divorce was finalized.
