New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted his tax return Tuesday morning in a jab at President Trump for not doing the same.
“See, President Trump? It’s not that hard,” Mr. De Blasio wrote on Tax Day, including a copy of his 2016 joint filing with wife Chirlane McCray.
“No one forces any of us to run for public office, but those in public office must be transparent about our finances,” the Democrat added.
The couple reported an adjusted gross income of $220,651 and paid a total of $69,523 in federal, state and city taxes, the mayor’s office said, the New York Daily News reported.
In a joint blog post on Medium, Mr. De Blasio and Mrs. McCray argued against the “cruel absurdity” of President Trump’s proposed tax overhaul that would give tax cuts to the wealthy.
“President Trump’s tax giveaway to the wealthiest among us makes zero sense, as does his decision to break decades of precedent and refuse to share his tax returns with the American people,” the couple wrote, chiding the president for “endless excuses” on the matter.
Thousands of protesters marched across the country over the weekend demanding that Mr. Trump publicly release his tax returns. The president on Sunday slammed the demonstrations as “paid for” and “small” and reminded critics that the “election is over!”

White House Press Secretary Spicer on Monday again cited an ongoing audit by the IRS as the reason why Mr. Trump would not make those returns public.
