InfoWars founder and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones is a “performance artist” who is simply playing a role, his attorney reportedly said during a recent custody hearing.
Attorney Randall Wilhite told a Texas judge during a pretrial hearing last week that Mr. Jones’ public persona shouldn’t be used to evaluate his ability to father his three children, who have lived with him since his divorce in 2015, the Austin American-Statesman reported.
“He’s playing a character,” Mr. Wilhite said. “He is a performance artist.”
Mr. Jones has been known for peddling highly controversial conspiracies theories, like accusing the U.S. government of being involved in orchestrating the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. He most recently apologized for promoting a conspiracy theory dubbed “Pizzagate” about a Washington, D.C., pizzeria being used as a front for a child sex-trafficking ring.
Kelly Jones, who is seeking sole or joint custody of their three children, said during the pretrial hearing that the on-air personality is the real Alex Jones, the American-Statesman reported.
“He’s not a stable person,” she said.
“I’m concerned that he is engaged in felonious behavior, threatening a member of Congress,” she said, referring to his recent expletive-filled rant against Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff. “He broadcasts from home. The children are there, watching him broadcast.”
Over the next two weeks, a jury at the Travis County Courthouse will have to determine whether Mr. Jones is a fit parent, the American-Statesman reported.
