SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A judge has decided that a criminal case against a Somali refugee who was shot by police will remain in juvenile court.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/2p3OR6n ) that Juvenile Judge Julie Lund issued her decision Friday. Prosecutors wanted drug and robbery charges against Abdullahi “Abdi” Mohamed moved to adult court due to the severity of the crime and his prior history in juvenile court.

Lund implored Mohamed to make the most of the chance she was giving him.

The 19-year-old Mohamed would have faced up to life in prison in adult court. Instead, the maximum punishment will be to remain in a secure juvenile justice facility until he turns 21.

Mohamed was 17 at the time of the incident outside a Salt Lake City homeless shelter that sparked unrest and protests.
