DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) - An Eldridge woman has pleaded guilty to neglect, telling a judge she knowingly failed to treat her young son’s rare genetic disorder, nearly leading to the boy’s death.

The Quad-City Times reports (https://bit.ly/2nNloNM ) that 30-year-old Valarie Clark pleaded guilty Thursday. She faces up to 10 years in prison when she’s sentenced June 8.

Police say Clark’s son suffers from PKU, a disorder characterized by the inability of the body to process proteins.

The boy, then 6, was admitted to a hospital in February 2016 for low blood sugar and starvation. Police say doctors discovered the boy was not being fed properly and had not received required medical care for about three years.

Clark’s live-in boyfriend at the time has pleaded to child endangerment and will be sentenced next week.
