A British student in Israel was stabbed to death Friday in what authorities are calling a terrorist attack.
The attacker stabbed a 25-year-old woman in her upper body on Jerusalem’s light rail train while it was passing through the center of the city, according to Israel police. A police officer on the train pulled the emergency brake and apprehended the terrorist.
“Police officers led me into the train where a young girl was lying unconscious with stab wounds to her upper body part,” said Zeevi Hanling of Magen David Adom, a volunteer first-responder unit.
The woman later died in the hospital, MDA said.
A 30-year-old pregnant woman and 50-year-old man were also injured in the attack.
The attacker was an middle-aged Arab man from the east Jerusalem village of Rasal Amud, Israel Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld wrote on Twitter.
The attack comes during Good Friday celebrations and towards the end of the holiday of Passover and at the beginning of Shabbat, the Jewish day of rest. Hundreds of Jews travel to the Western Wall to pray before sunset to mark the holiday.
Israel, and Jerusalem in particular, has been the scene of dozens of lone-wolf attacks including stabbings and car rammings, the majority committed by Palestinians.
Many attacks have taken place outside and in proximity to Jerusalem’s light rail, which travels between the east and west sides of the city.
Israel annexed the Old City and East Jerusalem after conquering the territory in the 1967 Six-Day War.
