NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - A shipbuilder says the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford has finished builder’s sea trials and is ready for delivery to the U.S. Navy.
Rolf Bartschi is Newport News Shipbuilding’s vice president for the Ford’s construction. The Virginian-Pilot reports (https://bit.ly/2p3N2q3 ) Bartschi said in a statement that the shipbuilder operated the ship out to sea and finished the builder’s trial on Friday.
The shipbuilder says the Ford must now undergo acceptance trials, which are conducted by the Navy.
Construction on the $12.9 billion Ford started in 2009. It was supposed to finish by September 2015, with costs at $10.5 billion. But there were issues with the carrier’s advanced systems and technology, including aircraft landing equipment and power generation.
