PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse plans to make his tax return public for the first time, as voters and lawmakers press for transparency in campaigns.
The issue has dogged President Donald Trump, who became the first presidential candidate in modern times to refuse to make his returns public. Whitehouse, a Rhode Island Democrat, criticized Trump’s decision.
WPRI-TV reports (https://bit.ly/2pyzOhb ) the senator’s spokeswoman says Whitehouse kept his and his wife’s return private to protect their children’s privacy. Their youngest is now 23.
Whitehouse asked for an extension to file. He plans to release a summary later this year.
Republican state Rep. Robert Nardolillo, who’s seeking Whitehouse’s job, wants to see returns for the decade Whitehouse has held the office.
U.S. Sen. Jack Reed, also a Rhode Island Democrat, releases his return.
