SMITHFIELD, N.C. (AP) - The N.C. Highway Patrol is investigating a four-vehicle accident on Interstate 40 that killed an 11-year-old boy.
A statement from the patrol says a Nissan Murano and a Hyundai Tucson were traveling east on I-40 in Johnston County around 1 p.m. on Tuesday as a tractor trailer and a Toyota Highlander were heading west.
Investigators say the driver of the Murano attempted a U-turn in the median and was hit from behind by the Tucson. The Murano went into the westbound lanes and was hit by the Highlander and the tractor trailer before it caught fire with the driver and two passengers inside.
The patrol said Isiah Jones died at the scene. Two others in the Murano and two people inside the Tucson were hospitalized with serious injuries.
