BEND, Ore. (AP) - A Portland-based nonprofit organization has filed a lawsuit alleging the state Department of Human Services violated federal disability laws by cutting funding for in-home services for people with developmental disabilities.
The Bulletin reports (https://is.gd/IBVvNT) Disability Rights Oregon filed the lawsuit in federal court Monday.
According to the group, roughly 11,000 Oregon residents relied on in-home care services between 2015 and 2017. The services, which include help with cooking and taking medication, are primarily funded with federal Medicaid dollars.
The group’s attorney, Tom Stenson, says reducing those services violates the Americans with Disabilities Act because it unnecessarily isolates people who have disabilities.
DHS spokeswoman Sherryll Johnson Hoar says the agency cannot comment on pending litigation, but she says the state strives to provide a support system for people with disabilities.
