Sen. Cory Gardner on Monday said the recent deployment of a Navy strike group toward the Korean Peninsula is an important “show of force” and that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un cannot be ignored.
“I think this is a very important show of force to the North Korean regime,” Mr. Gardner, Colorado Republican, said of the aircraft carrier-led group.
“We cannot ignore this forgotten madman any longer. We have to bring denuclearization to the North Korean regime and to the peninsula and make sure that China, our allies around the region, know we’re serious about this,” Mr. Gardner said on “Fox & Friends.”
Mr. Gardner said it’s “unacceptable” that China would allow the North Korean leader to continue the way he has. North Korea has continued to try to conduct missile tests in recent months.
National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster on Sunday likewise talked about a call for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, saying North Korea has been engaged in a pattern of “provocative behavior.”
“This is a rogue regime that is now a nuclear capable regime, and [Chinese] President Xi [Jinping] and President Trump agreed that that is unacceptable,” Mr. McMaster said on “Fox News Sunday.”
