KEARNEY, Neb. (AP) - The University of Nebraska Board of Regents approved a $6 million upgrade to the student union on the Kearney campus.

The board on Friday approved the plan, which will include the addition of a Chick-fil-A restaurant, an expansion of Starbucks, a new dining area and a meeting space, the Kearney Hub reported (https://bit.ly/2ou5YKX).

The project is slated to begin as early as this month and will include the renovation of the building entrance and adjacent corridors. It will also update interiors, fix issues with the heating and air conditioning systems, and address lighting and sewer issues.

“This multi-phase remodel will enhance the social and student activities hub of the university, providing programs, services, and spaces that are more fully aligned with current and future needs of students,” said Vice Chancellor for Business and Finance Jon Watts. “The proposed remodel will create highly interactive spaces that allow for students and student organizations to interact with each other in more meaningful ways, and the new restaurant choices will enhance the appeal of UNK’s most popular campus destination for students.”

University of Nebraska President Hank Bounds said the renovation will be conducted in phases, allowing the building to remain open during the work.

The project will be funded with $5 million in revenue bonds and $1 million from UNK’s dining service contractor.

The building also houses the Office of Multicultural Affairs and other offices. Much of that space was updated during renovations to the student union last year. The new renovations will match the design of the previous work, officials said.
