Arguing that the 2016 election cycle is a “referendum” on the direction of American society, Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz said he and wife Cari Tuna are endorsing Hillary Clinton for president and will contribute $20 million to Democratic campaign groups and liberal causes this year.
Mr. Moskovitz made the announcement in a blog post at Medium.com titled “Compelled to Act.”
“Will we be driven by fear, towards tribalism, emphasizing the things that divide us?” Mr. Moskovitz asked. “Will we focus on how to advantage those most similar to us while building barriers to separate us from the rest of the world? Or, alternatively, will we continue in the direction of increased tolerance, diversity and interdependence in the name of mutual prosperity?”
While this is the first election cycle in which either Mr. Moskovitz or his wife — a former Wall Street Journal reporter — have endorsed a presidential candidate, Ms. Tuna has donated to political causes previously.
In 2014, Ms. Tuna donated $150,000 to a voter initiative campaign to soften some drug possession laws, making them misdemeanors, Heavy.com reported Friday. That California ballot initiative passed with nearly 60 percent of the vote, according to Ballotpedia.org.
Ms. Cari also donated $26,000 to the failed 2014 congressional campaign of Democrat Sean Eldridge, who is the spouse of another Facebook co-founder, Chris Hughes.
