College kids in Blacksburg, Virginia will soon be able to get their Chipotle fix by drone.
“Project Wing, a drone project in Google’s X lab, will begin testing drone delivery of burritos at Virginia Tech later this month,” CNN reported on Thursday. “Google (GOOG) expects to conduct a few hundred deliveries over the course of several days or potentially weeks.”
Hungry Hokies weighing their dining options can always tell themselves that splurging on a calorie-rich burrito is just doing their part for the sake of humanity.
After all, as CNN Money noted, San Francisco-based Google “sees far broader potential for drones, including delivering supplies to isolated areas after natural disasters.”
“Google also sees drone delivery as a way to help the climate, and noted that in 2014 3.1 billion gallons of fuel were wasted in traffic congestion in the United States.”
An institution which has historically focused on engineering, Virginia Tech in 2013 was named as a leading partner in the FAA-approved Mid-Atlantic Aviation Partnership (MAAP), which is devoted to “progressively overcoming obstacles to move the unmanned aircraft systems industry forward at an accelerated pace.”
