Drew Brees set a deadline for the New Orlean Saints for a contract extension, and the Saints made sure to get him locked up.
According to ESPN’s Ed Werder, the Saints have signed Brees to a five-year deal, but it can be automatically voided to two years. Contractually, Brees will only be signed to the Saints for this season and next. Brees is guaranteed $44.25 million over the next two seasons ($20 million this season, $24.45 next).
According to ESPN’s Mike Triplett, Brees’ deal is spread over five years to reduce his $30 million cap hit this season, which was the highest cap hit in NFL history. His 2016 cap hit will be reduced to $17.25 million.
Since joining the Saints 10 years ago, Brees has thrown for 48,555 yards and 348 touchdowns. That’s more yards by any quarterback has in any 10-year span in the history of the NFL, according to Elias Sports. Brees has also led the NFL in passing yards in six of his 10 seasons with New Orleans.
Over his career, Brees has earned more than $150 million, according to spotrac. This is Brees’ third contract with the Saints, who signed him to a six-year, $60 million deal.
Brees’ 60,903 career passing yards rank fourth all-time in the NFL. Brees, who has averaged 5,127 yards per season over the last five years, is just 11,037 yards behind Peyton Manning for the most in NFL history.
