OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert returned to City Hall a week after falling and fracturing a vertebra.
Stothert, who had been working full-time since the accident, said she felt great as she returned to sign documents and address the media at City Hall on Thursday.
She said she still feels pain while walking or standing and will likely work half days as she recuperates. She also said she didn’t know if she would have to postpone two town hall meetings scheduled for next week.
Stothert, 62, said she fractured a vertebra when she fell while walking her three dogs.
“My feet went up in the air and I landed on my rear end and immediately I knew something had happened because I felt a hot burst of pain in my lower back and it radiated to both of my hips. So I knew something had happened,” she said.
Stothert said after her physicians gave her the choice she elected to let her back heal naturally without surgery. Currently Stothert’s estimated full recovery time will be about eight to 10 weeks and she will wear a back brace for four to six weeks.
She said she doesn’t think the injury will affect her campaign for re-election in 2017.
