The federal government is out with fresh sex advice for men and women who have traveled to areas with Zika outbreaks, even those who have never presented any symptoms of infection.

To avoid spreading the Zika virus to their partners, especially women attempting to get pregnant, men should not engage in unprotected sex for six months, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warned on Friday.

“The updated advice follows numerous case reports showing Zika may hide in semen for up to six months after symptoms begin, which typically include fever, rash, achy joints and muscles and red eyes similar to conjunctivitis,” CNN.com explained, noting this is the fifth time the CDC has altered its Zika guidelines related to pregnancy and the fourth time for sexual contact.

According to the CDC website, as of Thursday morning, 30 cases of Zika virus in the United States were contracted through sexual activity.
