Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump said Thursday he’s “very proud” of his pursuing President Obama’s birth certificate, saying he succeeded where Hillary Clinton had failed.
“I’m the one that got him to put up his birth certificate. Hillary Clinton was unable to get there, and I will tell you she tried,” Mr. Trump told NH1 News while in New Hampshire on Thursday.
“And you look at her campaign and everybody knows it happened. I would say that pretty much everybody agrees with me. But she tried and she was unable to do it, and I tried and I was able to do it. So I’m very proud of that,” he said.
Earlier this month, Mr. Trump tried to put the controversy behind him, saying: “President Barack Obama was born in the United States — period.”
When the subject came up at Monday’s presidential debate, he said it was Mrs. Clinton and her allies who started the controversy.
“I think I did a great job and a great service not only for the country, but even for the president, in getting him to produce his birth certificate,” Mr. Trump said at the debate.
Patti Solis Doyle, Mrs. Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign manager, has acknowledged they fired a volunteer who had raised the issue in an email but denies Mrs. Clinton or her 2008 campaign played a role in fomenting the false rumor that Mr. Obama was not born in the United States.
