PHOENIX (AP) - A state commission has recommended seven applicants for appointments to two new seats on the Arizona Supreme Court.
The Commission on Appellate Court Appointments interviewed nine applicants Friday. They had to forward at least three nominees for each opening to Gov. Doug Ducey, who will appoint the new justices.
Recommended were Arizona Court of Appeals judges Andrew Gould, Peter Swann and Samuel Thumma; Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Pamela Frasher Gates; John Lopez IV of the Arizona Attorney General’s Office; and lawyers Robert McWhirter and Thomas Gilson.
Ducey signed legislation in May to add two justices to the current five-member state high court.
The governor in January appointed Clint Bolick, a longtime attorney for the conservative-leaning Goldwater Institute, to fill an Arizona Supreme Court vacancy resulting from a retirement.
