NEW CASTLE, Pa. (AP) - Western Pennsylvania police say they’re looking for an armed and dangerous suspect from Detroit who escaped when they tried to arrest him.

New Castle police Chief Robert Salem says his officers tried to arrest 34-year-old Ernest Chapman Thursday on drug and parole violation charges stemming from a recent police chase.

Instead, Salem says Chapman put a gun to a friend’s head and made him drive away. After the car crashed, Chapman ran into some woods, though police believe he was later picked up by someone in another car.

New Castle is about 45 miles northwest of Pittsburgh. Because it’s near Interstate 80, it’s not uncommon for people from the Detroit area to be involved in drug trafficking in the city.

Salem says Chapman is “armed and dangerous.”
