JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Survivors of a black Mississippian shot dead by police in 2015 are suing involved officers and the city of Columbus.
The civil suit demanding money was filed Thursday on behalf of relatives of Ricky Ball in federal court in Aberdeen.
Former officer Canyon Boykin has said he shot Ball after the 26-year-old appeared to point a gun at Boykin during a foot chase. Boykin, who is white, was indicted this month for manslaughter.
Ball’s family disputes Boykin had cause to shoot Ball, another shooting under scrutiny following the 2015 death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.
The suit claims another officer planted a gun on Ball’s body and says Columbus officials knew Boykin was a problem after a 2014 encounter he and other officers had with a black store manager.
