FAIRLEE, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont State Colleges Board of Trustees has approved a plan to merge Johnson State College and Lyndon State College into one institution.

The Burlington Free Press (https://bfpne.ws/2dadf1C ) reports the plan approved Thursday morning would bring both Vermont schools under one administration. The board approved the concept in July.

The new institution needs to be accredited by the New England Association of Colleges and Schools before students enter the school in 2018. The U.S. Department of Education needs to green light the school so it can award federal financial aid.

The arrangement also needs approval from the NCAA. Chancellor Jeb Spaulding wants to keep the athletic teams of the two schools separate, so they will need to be independently run.

Names for the institution will be officially recommended in December.
