MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Employees at the Electrolux appliance factory in Memphis have voted to be represented by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers union.
The Commercial Appeal reports (https://memne.ws/2dsw8Zg ) that about 650 workers cast ballots in the unionization vote, which prevailed by a more than 2-to-1 margin. The election came about 16 months after a previous unionization effort was defeated.
Union supporter argued after the 2015 vote that Swedish-owned Electrolux had failed to follow a neutrality policy on union issues. The company denied that claim, citing differing labor traditions between the U.S. and Europe.
The $190 million plant opened in 2014 after state, county and city governments pledged more than $150 million in grants and incentives.
IBEW Local 474 business manager Paul Shaffer says the union looks forward to the collective bargaining process.
