COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Columbia’s mayor and one of the University of South Carolina’s most beloved football stars are teaming up to celebrate heart health.

Mayor Steve Benjamin on Thursday has invited Marcus Lattimore to mark World Heart Day in Columbia. Lattimore and others are joining the mayor for a roundtrip walk from City Hall to the Statehouse.

That will be followed by a heart-healthy lunch and free cholesterol screenings.

The event is in partnership with the National Forum for Heart Disease & Stroke Prevention. That group says mayors across the country are hosting similar events today.

Benjamin’s office says heart disease is the leading cause of death in Columbia. Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death.
