VALDOSTA, Ga. (AP) - Authorities say a south Georgia police officer fatally shot a man who came at her with a knife as the officer tried to intervene in a violent domestic fight.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Thursday that Valdosta police officer Alyssa Shirey fired her gun as the man kept advancing after she first tried to subdue him with a stun gun.

The GBI news release says the officer was trying to protect a woman who was being struck by Johnathan Lozano-Murillo. Then he drew a knife and she shot him.

Lozano-Murillo who died later at a hospital. GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles said the officer is white and Lozano-Murillo was Hispanic. The GBI is investigating.
