PHOENIX (AP) - The Phoenix City Council has voted unanimously to allow city employees to publicly state their personal opinions about candidates for city elective offices.
A measure approved by the council Tuesday to change the City Code allows city workers to post their views on social media, to sign nominating and recall petitions and to display political signs for city elections in their yards and other non-government property.
City employees are still prohibited from engaging in political activities while working or wearing a city uniform and cannot initiate or circulate nominating or recall petitions.
Councilwoman Laura Pastor says the changes uphold city worker’s’ constitutional rights to participate in political activity and bring the city more into line with federal and state governments.
The changes take effect Nov. 9.
