WAYNESBORO, Tenn. (AP) - With western cougars expanding their range, Tennessee wildlife authorities have confirmed that a cougar was documented in Wayne County for the first time earlier this month.
News outlets report that the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency confirmed a trail camera captured the cat’s image Sept. 4 on property located between Linden and the county seat of Waynesboro.
The wildlife agency has confirmed eight sightings in the state since September 2015, with five confirmations in Humphreys County. It’s unclear how many different cougars have been spotted.
Agency biologist Joy Sweaney says other states surrounding Tennessee, including Arkansas and Missouri, have also confirmed cougar sightings, indicating the presence of western cougars, which have been expanding their range for years.
Anyone who spots a cougar is asked to contact the TWRA.
