HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Connecticut public health officials say they have identified the state’s first case of domestically acquired Zika virus.
The state Department of Public Health announced the case on Wednesday. Officials say the patient had recently traveled to Florida. No further details about the patient were released.
Officials say 85 patients have tested positive for Zika in Connecticut to date. Five of those patients were pregnant.
Officials are reminding residents to avoid travel to regions that have been affected by the Zika virus. They say travelers to these areas should protect themselves from the virus by taking steps to prevent mosquito bites.
Pregnant women in particular should be careful because of the link between Zika and possible birth defects.
