PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The U.S. Department of Justice says an audit shows the University of Rhode Island mishandled the way it administered three federal grants.

The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2dspwd8) Inspector General Michael Horowitz announced Wednesday that URI did not “adequately manage the grants” it received in 2009, 2011 and 2012.

The grants, which totaled $1.2 million, were from the department’s Office of Justice Programs. They were intended to develop software designed to assist law-enforcement efforts against child pornography and help investigations involving internet data.

Horowitz says URI “achieved the goals and objectives of the grants” but the audit found “non-compliance or discrepancies in several areas,” including URI’s management of financial awards and its compliance with award conditions.

URI disagreed with nearly all of the audit’s findings.

The school had no immediate comment.
