Indiana Gov. Mike Pence said Tuesday he thought Donald Trump had a “great night” and showed restraint in the face of an “avalanche of insults” from Hillary Clinton at Monday’s presidential debate.

“The whole evening was an avalanche of insults by Hillary Clinton,” Mr. Pence, the GOP vice presidential nominee, said on NBC’s “Today” program.

“From very early in the debate, it was one line after another leveling personal attacks at Donald Trump,” Mr. Pence said, saying Mr. Trump showed restraint.

“For the president of the United States, that person has to have the temperament, they have to have the restraint to be able to deal with the wider world and the challenges facing the American people,” Mr. Pence said.

“Obviously two different styles on the stage — one [was] very, very scripted, politician, 30 years in public life and here on the other side you saw a businessman, a doer, someone who [has] spent a lifetime building speaking straight to the American people, and I just thought Donald Trump had a great night,” he said.

Mr. Trump said during a Fox News appearance Tuesday morning that he could have gone after former President Bill Clinton’s extramarital affairs but that he didn’t want to do it with his daughter Chelsea Clinton in the room.

Mr. Pence will debate Sen. Tim Kaine, the Democrats’ vice presidential nominee, next Tuesday, Oct. 4 in Farmville, Virginia.
