BALTIMORE (AP) - Federal officials are announcing racketeering conspiracy charges against 24 people they say were involved in a Baltimore-area gang.

The indictment unsealed Tuesday alleges that members of the Murdaland Mafia Piru, a subset of the Bloods gang, engaged in narcotics trafficking, murder, attempted murder, assault, extortion, obstruction of justice, witness intimidation and retaliation and money laundering. Officials say 17 are in custody and they’re looking for seven others.

Prosecutors say the gang is descended from another Bloods gang that was disbanded after a 2008 indictment. They say the gang controlled the drug trade in parts of northwest Baltimore and neighboring Baltimore County.

The indictment alleges that members bought valuable property through nominees and funneled drug proceeds through casinos, making it appear that they had won money gambling.
