PORT HURON, Mich. (AP) - A former Port Huron employee who authorities say embezzled more than $60,000 from a union representing city utilities workers will spend eight months in the St. Clair County Jail.

The Times Herald of Port Huron reports (https://bwne.ws/2cGpDUi ) that 45-year-old Chad Shappee of St. Clair County’s Kimball Township was sentenced Monday.

Shappee pleaded guilty in July to embezzling $20,000 to $50,000. He was originally charged with embezzling $50,000 to $100,000. Money was taken from the Utility Workers Union of America Local 532 from 2008 to 2015 when Shappee was treasurer.

Shappee was a backhoe operator for the city of Port Huron’s utilities division. He resigned following his arraignment in May.

The newspaper reports that Shappee borrowed money from a relative and paid more than $60,000 in restitution.
