Donald Trump will have to put down his keyboard for Monday night’s debate, but he announced his campaign staff will take charge of his Twitter account for the duration, keeping his millions of fans in the loop on how they see things going down.
“My team of deplorables will be managing my Twitter account for this evenings debate,” he said in a post just hours before the 9 p.m. debate.
Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton earlier this month blasted half of Mr. Trump’s supporters as “racists” and “the haters” — what she called the “basket of deplorables.”
Mr. Trump has been prolific on Twitter, using @realDonaldTrump to reach nearly 12 million followers. And he is often the man behind the keyboard, or dictating his thoughts to staff.
Mrs. Clinton’s account, meanwhile, is usually controlled by her staff. Her rare personal tweets are signed with “-H.”
The 2016 election marks a coming of age for Twitter, which was around for 2012 but has come to dominate this year’s campaign — in no small part because of Mr. Trump.
He has blasted his opponents, had to explain his retweets of white supremacists, and even attacked Pope Francis after the leader of the Catholic Church said Mr. Trump’s plan to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border was un-Christian.
