Instead of defending (rightly) that Hillary Clinton’s 2008 campaign started a whisper campaign questioning President Barack Obama’s heritage, he should have laid out his agenda for change.

It was typical Trump: Doubling-down on his position. But it was wasted time, of which Mrs. Clinton took advantage.

“He [Trump] started his political activity based on this racist lie that our first black president was not an American citizen,” Mrs. Clinton said.

Mr. Trump responded saying he did “a great job and a great service – not only for the country, but even for the president – in letting him produce his birth certificate.”

Mrs. Clinton then attacked Mr. Trump for being sued twice by the Justice Department for discriminating against African-Americans.

“We settled the lawsuit with zero admission of guilt,” Mr. Trump retorted – though it probably sounded better in his head than it did to the American people.

“When you try to act holier-than-thou, it really doesn’t work,” Mr. Trump said of Mrs. Clinton’s attacks.

Verdict. This blow-by-blow goes to Mrs. Clinton. She clearly got under his skin and got him on the defensive. The American people don’t care about birtherism or Mr. Trump’s lawsuits – they want to hear about his direction and vision for the country.
