SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Union Pacific Railroad is postponing a planned break up of its 21-mile causeway on the Great Salt Lake.

The Salt Lake Tribune reported (https://bit.ly/2d22L0a) Saturday that the company has agreed to put off the breach until December to avoid an untimely drop in water levels.

Officials originally were going to start construction this month or next on a 180-foot bridge to break up the causeway, allowing water to again flow back and forth and put the north and south water levels on par.

Railroad spokesman Justin Jacobs says the delay is a mutual decision with the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands.

Officials found last December that drought had caused water levels in the lake’s northern portion to drop to a historic low for the second consecutive year.
