JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A newspaper reports that the Mississippi Department of Education’s travel expenses are a bit above the regional average, and are the third-highest of any Mississippi agency.

The Clarion-Ledger reports (https://on.thec-l.com/2djJR4w ) that the department spent about $2 million on travel last year.

It says that compares to a seven-state education department average of $1.9 million for each of the past two years. Arkansas and Louisiana spent less than Mississippi; Georgia, Florida and Kentucky spent more.

Within Mississippi, the Department of Human Services spent most on travel, at $8.5 million. Next was the state Department of Health, at $6.2 million.

State Board of Education president John Kelly calls travel spending part of “the cost of doing business.”

He says that to really improve, you need to know what other states are doing.
