Miami Marlins pitcher and two-time All-Star Jose Fernandez was killed in a boating accident off the shores of Miami.

“The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of Jose Fernandez. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time,” the Marlins said in a released statement.
Fernandez was drafted with the Marlins’ first round pick in 2011 and won the National League Rookie of the year in 2013.
Fernandez, 24, was enjoying a 16-8 record and a 2.86 ERA, the ninth-best ERA in the National League. Fernandez also set a Marlins franchise record with 253 strikeouts.
It was the best season for the young ace, who was developing into a household name among MLB fans. He was known around the league for an infectious smile and a fun-loving personality.

“All of Baseball is shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of Miami Marlins pitcher José Fernández,” MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said. “He was one of our game’s great young stars who made a dramatic impact on and off the field since his debut in 2013. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, the Miami Marlins organization and all of the people he touched in his life.”
According to Deadspin, Fernandez announced that his girlfriend was pregnant just five days ago.
Sunday’s Marlins game against the Atlanta Braves, which was scheduled for 1:10 p.m. ET has been cancelled and will be played at a later date.
