BOSTON (AP) - The union representing thousands of janitors working in Boston has voted to authorize a strike if a new contract can’t be reached.

The Boston Globe reports (https://bit.ly/2d81ghF) the union voted Saturday to authorize the strike unless the contract is settled by Friday.

A union spokesman says the strike would affect 13,000 janitors who clean 2,000 buildings in Boston, including the Prudential Building, John Hancock Tower and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority buildings. He says they would be without janitors starting in October.

A spokesman for the Maintenance Contractors of New England, which is bargaining with the janitors’ union, says the vote to strike was unwarranted because the two groups held “productive talks” last week.

MCNE is an association of the 20 largest building service contractors in New England.
