NEW YORK (AP) - Hillary Clinton’s 2000 U.S. Senate opponent has some debate advice for Donald Trump: Stay at the podium.

Former Long Island Republican Congressman Rick Lazio tells the New York Daily News (https://nydn.us/2d657tl ) Trump should learn from Lazio’s mistake.

During a 2000 debate against Clinton, Lazio crossed the stage and confronted his Democratic opponent. He tried to get her to sign a campaign finance pledge.

The move backfired. Lazio was viewed as sexist and a bully and he went on to lose to Clinton. He has not held elective office since.

Lazio says this year he is not supporting either major party candidate running for president.

Trump and Clinton meet in the first of three debates Monday night at Hofstra University in suburban New York.
