President Obama mocked Donald Trump’s recent assertion that African-American communities are in the worst shape ever by saying “even most 8-year-olds” would say slavery wasn’t very good for black people.
“I think even most 8-year-olds [will] tell you — that whole slavery thing wasn’t very good for black people,” Mr. Obama said in an interview that aired Friday on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” “Jim Crow wasn’t very good for black people.”
“What we have to do is use our history to propel us to make even more progress in the future,” he said.
Mr. Obama was speaking from the new Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.
In a recent speech at a Congressional Black Caucus Foundation event, Mr. Obama had said there’s a museum for Mr. Trump to visit as he was criticizing him about the subject.
“This was in response to an assertion that he then repeated after my remarks that this is the worst time ever to be black,” Mr. Obama said in the ABC interview.
Mr. Trump has recently made his pitch to black voters by asking versions of: “What do you have to lose?”
“African-American communities are absolutely in the worst shape that they’ve ever been in before — ever, ever, ever,” Mr. Trump said in a recent speech.
