RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A political action committee created to oppose Gov. Pat McCrory’s re-election is running an ad the next two weeks criticizing the Republican for his handling of groundwater contamination around coal ash pits.

The Conservation Votes PAC is spending $700,000 on ads in the Triad and Asheville television markets through Oct. 5. A lobbyist for the North Carolina League of Conservation Voters runs the PAC.

The ad alleges McCrory let Duke Energy get off easily with a monetary punishment for groundwater cleanup and suggests it’s because he used to work there.

McCrory’s environmental agency has said it was forced to reduce a larger fine because of a policy adopted under McCrory’s Democratic predecessor. A McCrory campaign spokesman says the governor is addressing problems around coal ash pits otherwise ignored for years.
